The Abuja division of the Federal High Court on Tuesday sacked Ebonyi state governor, Dave Umahi, and his deputy, Eric Igwe, from office over their defection to the All Progressives Congress.

The Peoples Democratic Party had approached the court seeking that Mr Umahi is sacked for dumping the PDP.

The court ruled that Mr Umahi and his deputy cannot continue in their offices after defecting to the APC since the PDP won the 2019 governorship election in Ebonyi, and not Messrs Umahi and Igwe. The judgement, delivered by Justice Inyang Ekwo, held that the total number of 393,042 votes Umahi secured at the 9th March 2019 Ebonyi State governorship election, belonged to the PDP, hence could not be legally transferred to the APC.

Justice Inyang Ekwo ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to stop recognising Mr Umahi and his deputy and that the PDP send names of those to replace the governor and deputy to INEC.
