As part of activities to hit the ground running after their election and inauguration, and poised to embark on effective local government representation and development, the leaders of the legislative houses of the 17 Legislative Councils, penultimate week, paid a working visit to the Enugu State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, Hon. Solomon Onah.

The delegation also seized the opportunity to congratulate Onah, who is also the Chairman of Udenu Local Council, and his colleagues over their victory in the recently concluded elections, pledging to work well with the Executive arm of the local government which the Chairmen represent.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the coordinating leader of the 17 leaders of the local legislative council, Hon. Nnamdi Odo, said the legislators hope to achieve a cordial working relationship with them.

“Like every tier of government, the local government also have the Executive and Legislative arm. We know that for both arms to deliver on their campaign promises to their people in the rural areas, there is a need for synergy between both arms of the local government.

“When this synergy is achieved, there’s no limit to the dividends of democracy that can be brought to the people, and this is one of the core reasons for this visit”, he said.

The Leaders used the opportunity to inform the ALGON Chairman about a proposed 1 day Legislative Summit for all the 260 Councilors in the state to meet, deliberate on their welfare, discuss and strategize on their roles in the forthcoming elections.

Furthermore, the Leaders’ request for a liaison office in the ALGON office was welcomed by the Chairman, who promised to donate an office at the ALGON headquarters in Enugu to the Councilors for easy correspondence.

Responding, the ALGON Chairman thanked the Legislative Leaders for their unity in purpose, noting that the present leaders were very much different from what he had seen in the past, and from their unity of purpose, he could observe that they were ready for work. He further adviced the Legislative Leaders on how best to carry their fellow Councilors along and to use the opportunity given to them to climb higher, while pledging to support the summit.
