The governor of Kano, Abba Yusuf, has given orders to the accountant-general of the state to cease giving salaries to 10,800 workers, who are believed to have been employed by the Abdullahi-led administration.
Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, the accountant-general of Kano state, made this announcement on Monday while addressing journalists, saying that the governor had called for an investigation to confirm that the affected employees were legitimately hired, and to remove the illegally employed ones. The said workers can continue to serve in their places of appointment until the investigation is completed.
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) chapter in Kano, had last year, accused the Ganduje administration of collapsing the state’s public service and characterized the government’s recruitment drive as dubious.
Since taking the oath of office on May 29, Yusuf has started undoing some of his predecessor’s measures. He requested a probe into “inappropriate deductions” made by some businesses from the wages of government employees and the earnings of public hospitals last week.
The governor has also started to demolish buildings built by Ganduje. Additionally, Yusuf cancelled the purported sale of the Hasiya Bayero Paediatric Hospital by the previous administration.
