Tragedy struck Friday morning in Lagos as a building collapse at 122 Herbert Macaulay Way, Ebute Meta, claimed the lives of two adults, one male and one female. Rescue efforts are currently underway, with hopes high for locating and saving any remaining survivors.
The two-story building with a penthouse reportedly caved in around 9:00 am, trapping a family inside. Authorities confirmed the casualties and the ongoing search for others potentially buried under the debris.
“Rescue efforts are ongoing, with search and rescue teams working tirelessly to locate and extricate the remaining family members,” stated Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service. “One adult female has already been rescued alive and is in stable condition, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the tragedy.”
Officials urged residents to avoid the area to allow emergency personnel unrestricted access and facilitate smooth rescue operations. The State Emergency Response Unit is fully mobilised and collaborating with the Fire and Rescue Service to coordinate the operation.
This incident underlines the ongoing issue of building collapses in Lagos, raising concerns about construction quality and safety regulations. As rescue efforts continue, the community grapples with the loss of life and prays for the safety of any remaining trapped victims.
